The Two Wings on Which Liberty Soars Under Lordship

Galatians 5:1 Amplified

In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered

and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].

Introduction:

Paul pens what many scholars call the “magna carta” of the New Testament, the epistle to the church at Galatia.  Chapters 5 and 6 are practical applications to the work of grace that preceded in chapters 1-4.  Chapter 5 opens with a profound statement: It is for freedom’s sake that Christ has set us free.  Freedom was a commodity delegated to man in the garden as a test.  Genesis 2:17-18, Of every tree in the garden YOU MAY FREELY eat.  But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, YOU SHALL NOT EAT; for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die.  From this we can conclude that liberty has two wings on which to soar under divine Lordship; Responsibility and Accountability, as well as, Sonship and Lordship.  Freedom is difficult to define like love.  It is even more difficult to achieve and maintain. Much of what we call freedom is but a corruption of our desire to have a license to live without laws and accountability. (M. Monroe)

Freedom is never free.  It always comes with a cost.  Freedom without the restraints of responsibility and accountability bears the ultimate weight of choices made in anarchy.  Anarchy is the deceit of freedom that ends in the tyranny of intolerance to the harvest of seeds sown.  Paul wrote, Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows that shall he will also reap (Gal. 6:7), a.k.a. the Law of Inevitability.  The entire universe is set up on Cause and Effect.  There is no escaping it.  Each of us are given our own private world within and our oikos world without. This is important because how you run your life will be how you rule in heaven.

Paul continues to unpack freedom’s trade: For you brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but to serve one another in love. (Gal. 5:13)  His premise is that we use freedom as intended avoiding the polar opposites of legalism and liberalism.  The letter to the Galatians was addressing legalism vs. being justified by faith.  However, the Bible confronts the abuses of liberty also.  The prophet Micah addressed those who schemed and practiced to do wrong …because it was in their power to do it (Mic. 2:1).  Jude warned of those who turn the grace of our God into a license to lawlessness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 4).  God alone sets the borders on grace and freedom.  Just as is with the Word of God, we are neither to add nor subtract from freedom.  We shall not fail the grace of God by falling short of freedom in legalism nor shall we exceed the limits of freedom in the liberality of abuse.  Paul writes in the context of freedom The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Gal. 5:6).  In the kingdom of heaven that are no mandates, bans, or censorships for the law of love is the all-covering, all-encompassing filter.  Augustine wrote: If you love God, you may do as you incline.  The Spirit of the fruit of love regulates the usage of freedom to which Paul concludes; against such there is no law (Gal. 5:23)

Now we are responsible and accountable to develop freedom and live freely within the laws of love not the love of laws.  The finished work at the cross in the nature of the new creature in Christ reinstalls the trusted exchange of freedom.  Jesus said, If you continue in My teachings you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free.  He whom the Son sets free is free indeed (Jn. 8:31-32, 36).  “Free indeed”, is to emphasize the statement in confirming that it is something more free than one may understand.  Other translations render it: you are really free; you are unquestionably free; and you are free through and through.  This is similar to freedom for freedom’s sake.  Freedom was born of love and the result of grace.

The kingdom of heaven is a pro-choice culture.  Not to take precious life but to be custodians of all life and freedoms to live and move and have our being in Him (Acts 17:28)Dr. Myles Monroe wrote: The person who cannot see the ultimate becomes slave to the immediate.  True freedom demands great responsibility, accountability, a spirit of stewardship, maturity, wisdom and character.  God self-regulates His freedom from who He is: it is impossible for Him to lie; in Him there is no shadow of turning; and no darkness at all.  Jesus comes as our liberator bringing kingdom-freedom to those imprisoned and enslaved.  An inmate cannot free the prisoner in the cell next door.  Jesus was conceived of supernatural seed, born of a virgin, and knew no sin.  His only God was His Father in heaven, He did nothing of Himself but through the Father by the Holy Spirit.  Now those who enter His work become those who are freed to be a servant of Him.

Not only are we to live in truth, love, and liberty—we are to be messengers of hope.  But Scripture charges false messengers: They promise freedom while they themselves are slaves to depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him (2 Pet. 2:19 NIV).  Therein lies the difference.  We are either mastered by slavery or we are to master our freedom.  Our freedom is lived out in another life.  You are not your own, for you have been bought with a price. (1 Cor. 6:19); It is no longer I who lives, but Christ lives in me and the life I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God… (Gal. 2:20).  Free as intended, free as redeemed!

As we prepare our hearts to seek Him let us view this new found freedom from the angle of the following story:

A slave is placed on the auction block where in bids are made.  Alas, a voice sounds the final offer and the slave is sold to the highest bidder.  As the slave steps down the certificate of ownership is given to the new owner.  But then, the owner hands the certificate of freedom to the slave and says “There’s your freedom, bought and paid for in full!”  To which the free slave hands the certificate back to the owner saying, “I know you to be a just master and a good man.  I could find no better place to serve than in your house where I will be loved, accepted, and highly valued as a son would be!”

Beloved, we were slave/servants to the father of lies and sin’s dominion.  Now we are son/servants free to live under the tutelage of Christ’s Lordship and the Law of the Spirit where there is freedom.

The freedom we freely received must be freely given.  It was secured for us having been nailed to the cross.  But it is the heart of the Father that our personal freedom does not end with us.  Freely you have received, freely give (Mt. 10:8).  The words of Leviticus 25:10 are inscribed on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia: Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.  This is our mission statement!  Freedom is both a blessing and a burden.  A blessing because we are free to be who we are called to be and free to use the freedom delegated to us to advance the kingdom, preach the gospel and make disciples, enjoy life, explore possibilities, and pursue the pleasures of God.  Freedom is a burden because it is the most expensive commodity in the universe.  For it cost the Father His Son and Jesus His life.  We are not just to use it just on ourselves alone, but spend it in the marketplace where souls are bought and sold in slavery and sonship.  Salvation is free, the rest will cost everything.  Freedom is more difficult than slavery because it demands more of us than oppression does.  There is no greater burden than freedom, no heavier load than liberty. (M. Monroe)

Jesus best defined freedom by the choice of two roads to journey. The one road is straight and narrow at first but expands and extends more and more freedom with more responsibility and accountability.  Only a few find it.  The other road starts out free, broad, and wide—as far as one can see.  But as the soul traveler continues the road narrows exceedingly and the way becomes bound.  Inevitably the pilgrim becomes a slave by what mastered him leading to his destruction.  Many enter this way. (Mt. 7:13-14)

We will pray into Five Exchanges for Freedom’s Sake where we are trading our losses for His gains.  We are handing the certificate of freedom back to Christ’s Lordship to serve as sons-in-love.

  • Freedom From Slavery and Sin’s Dominion
  • Freedom For Sonship and Reigning as Kings
  • Freedom From Legalism and the Letter that Kills
  • Freedom For Responsibility and The Law of the Spirit
  • Freedom For Freedom’s Sake

1 Peter 2:16 TPT: As God’s loving servants, you should live in complete freedom, but never use your freedom as a cover-up for evil.  It’s time to mount up on the wings of responsibility and accountability and soar under the freedom of being mastered by the Lord Himself!  His eye is on the sparrow!

  1. FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY and SIN’S DOMINION

John 8:36 NIV

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Romans 6:14 NKJV

For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law but under grace.

General Direction: To labor in grace, not be driven by a slave/servant, orphaned-heart mentality, but led by the Spirit as sons of God and changed from once degree to another by the same reflection in the Spirit-mirror; to see ourselves the way we are seen through our Father’s eyes and swell and expand to break the yoke of slavery and walk and live in the freedom of the Son.

Scriptures:

  • 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of [a]corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. –Rom. 8:2, 21 NKJV
  • I beseech[a] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your [b]reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. –Rom. 12:1-2 NKJV
  • 9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a [a]stumbling block to those who are weak. –1 Cor. 8:9 NKJV
  • 22 His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,And he is caught in the cords of his sin. –Pro. 5:22 NKJV
  • 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. –Jn. 8:34 NKJV
  • 23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” –Acts 8:23 NKJV
  • 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? –Rom. 6:16 NKJV
  • 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. –Rom. 7:23 NKJV
  • 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. –2 Tim. 2:26 NKJV
  • 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of [a]corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into [b]bondage. –2 Pet. 2:19 NKJV
  • 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba,[a] Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, –Rom. 8:14-16 NKJV
  • 3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born[a] of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, [b]“Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir [c]of God [d]through Christ. –Rom. 4:3-7 NKJV
  • 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. –Jn. 15:14-16 NKJV
  • 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. –1 Jn. 1:6-7 NKJV
  • 20 He who walks with wise men will be wise,But the companion of fools will be destroyed. –Pro. 13:20 NKJV
  • 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! –1 Cor. 10:12 NIV
  • 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (emancipation from bondage, freedom).18 And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit. –2 Cor. 3:17-18 Amp.

Prayer Points:

  • To appropriate the freedom that has been freely given all who believe in to the finished work of Christ on the cross.
  • To grow into fullness to break off the yoke of slavery by expanding into the fullness of the measure of Christ in us.
  • To break the chains and lift the burden of an orphaned-heart and slave-mentality.
  • To experience the spirit of wisdom and revelation in knowledge of the Son of God and whom the Son sets free will be free indeed.
  • To learn to walk in the light of truth as the Son walks and to foster fellowship in Sonship to transition from slave/servant to son/servant.
  • To seek to walk with the wise to grow wise and cease and desist from measuring ourselves with ourselves and comparing ourselves with other people and begin to change from one degree to the same by the Spirit-mirror reflection of the Son being formed in us.
  • To discipline ourselves by the Spirit-fruit of self-control to not yield our member’s to sin’s slavery, but to master our dominion by the Spirit of freedom.
  • To understand that the law is the schoolmaster that brings us to Christ and He offers us fullness of grace and truth to liberate our purpose and destiny.
  • To dial into the Spirit of Adoption and remain highly sensitive to His voice and leadings and refuse to be driven by the father of lies and sin’s enticement and dominion.

  1. FREEDOM FOR SONSHIP and REIGNING AS KINGS

Galatians 3:26; 4:7 NKJV

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Revelation 5:9-10 NKJV

You are worthy…For Your were slain and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.

And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.

General Direction: That we are in the process of training for reigning with Christ as co-heirs and that by faith we enter into the position of sonship but by obedience we embrace the condition of sonship; as sons we live for Father’s promise, approval, and pleasure.

Scriptures:

  • 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. –Gal. 6:2, 10 NIV
  • 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, [b]“Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir [c]of God [d]through Christ. –Gal. 4:3-7 NKJV
  • 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. –Jn. 8:31-32, 36 NIV
  • 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; –1 Pet. 2:9 NKJV
  • 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. –Rom 8:22-23 NKJV
  • 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. –Rom 8:17 NKJV
  • 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [a]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: –Jn. 1:12 NKJV
  • 15 that you may become blameless and [a]harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, –Phil. 2:15 NKJV
  • Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know [b]us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. –1 Jn. 3:1-3, 10 NKJV
  • 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. –Jn. 12:36 NKJV

  • 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. —1 Thes. 5:5 NKJV
  • 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. –Titus 3:7 NKJV
  • 18 “Iwill be a Father to you,And you shall be My sons and daughters,Says the Lord ” –2 Cor. 6:18 NKJV
  • 21 “Not everyone who says to Me,‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. –Mt. 7:21 NKJV
  • 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” –Mt. 12:50 NKJV
–Rom. 12:1-2 NKJV
  • 7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.“Eat and drink!” he says to you,But his heart is not with you. –Pro. 23:7 NKJV
  • 6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,And scourges every son whom He receives.”  10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.  14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; –Heb. 12:6, 10, 14-15 NKJV
  • Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, –Eph. 1:1-3, 13 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • That our redemptive vision of the image of God the Father, God the Son and the Spirit of Adoption would release prophetic revelation of who we are created in His image and likeness and grow and mature as sons/daughters into kings and priests.
  • That we be transformed by the renewing of our minds to transition from thinking like a slave/victim/orphan to thinking like a son/servant/adopted/beloved, and king and priest to our God.
  • That we study to show ourselves approved in the rightly dividing the word of truth in our sonship/adoption, spiritual blessings in heavenly places, heritage, and inheritance sealed for us by the Spirit of promise.
  • That we learn to seek approval from the Father as sons not approval from men as slaves.
  • That we comprehend the fullness of the measure of the stature of Christ being formed in us qualifying us to be co-heirs in training for reigning with Him on earth.
  • That we no longer think or act like slaves but realize our uniqueness, our worth, and our identity and how our love for God frees us to live in freedom.
  • That we learn that God the Father trains, disciplines, and instructs His children not in anger or punishment but in redemptive hope and to share His holiness.
  • That by faith we enter into the position of Sonship and be obedience we embrace the condition of Sonship.

  1. FREEDOM FROM LEGALISM and THE LETTER THAT KILLS

Romans 7:23-25 NKJV

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.  O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?  I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 NKJV

…our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit;

for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Matthew 5:17 NIV

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

General Direction: That we labor in grace to discern the yeast of legalism and slavery to self-idolatry and sin; that we understand the life giving power of the Spirit in the perfect law of liberty; that we keep His commandments, not be saved but because we are saved; that His love laws warns us from consequences and reward us for obedience.

Scriptures:

  • 21 “Not everyone who says to Me,‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. –Mt. 7:21 NKJV
  • 24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and[a] –Mt. 6:24 NKJV
  • 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.14 [a]Because narrow is the gate and[b]difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’–Mt. 7:13-14, 22-23 NKJV
  • Foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you [a]that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed [b]among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? –Gal. 3:1-3 NKJV
  • 16 knowing that a man is not [a]justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died [a]in vain.”–Gal. 2:16, 20-21 NKJV
  • 24 Therefore the law was our [a]tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.—Gal. 3:24-29 NKJV
  • Stand[a] fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [a]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. –Gal. 5:1, 13-14, 22-23 NKJV
  • 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. –Jam. 1:25 NKJV
  • 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth [a]through the Spirit in [b]sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of [c]corruptible seed but [d]incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides [e]forever, –1 Pet. 1:22-23 NKJV
  • 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. –1 Pet. 2:5, 9-10 NKJV
  • 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him,7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.  14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.[a] 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.  20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. –Col. 2:6-10, 14-18, 20-23 NIV
  • Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. –Col. 3:1-3 NIV
  • 35 Then they remembered that God was their rock,And the Most High God their Redeemer. –Ps. 78:35 NKJV
  • 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the[a]friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.” 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”  27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the  28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”–Mk. 2:19-22, 24, 27-28 NKJV
  • 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.” 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus [a]Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” –Acts 15:5, 11 NKJV
  • 6 Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the[a]leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”  11 How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the [a]leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”12 Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the [b]doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. –Mt. 16:6, 11-12 NKJV
  • 6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore [a]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed [b]for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor. 5:6-8 NKJV
  • 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. –Gal. 5:9 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • That we refuse the yeast of the Pharisees (legalism) that bases God’s love and our relationship with Him on our performance track not Christ’s finished work and approval.
  • That we understand that Jesus did not come to abolish the Law and Prophets but to fulfill them that in Him we have the perfect law of freedom.
  • That we learn that the law is the schoolmaster that leads us to Christ, and by them we are warned and rewarded for our obedience in love to God’s commands.
  • That we comprehend that the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death—not to do as we want to but to do as we should do as Spirit-led, adopted children.
  • That we learn to take on Christ’s yoke of sonship and put off the yoke of slavery.
  • That we discern that living by the letter of the law is first impossible, for none of us are good, and that self-righteousness is contempt for Christ’s finished work and insult to the Spirit of grace; that we are no longer slaves to sin to servants to righteousness leading to holiness in Christ.

  1. FREEDOM FOR RESPONSIBILITY and THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:13 NIV

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh;

rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Romans 8:2, 4 NKJV

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

…in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

1 Peter 2:16 NKJV

Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.

General Direction: That we comprehend that freedom and the law of the Spirit is for those who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit; that true freedom requires proven responsibility and complete accountability; that our freedom has a cost, in that, we are not free to live the life we intend for ourselves, but the life intended for us to live.

Scriptures:

  • 13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not [a]prevail against it. –Mt. 16:13-18 NKJV
  • 18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again[a] I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” –Mt. 18:18-20 NKJV
  • 27 No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house. –Mk. 3:27 NKJV
  • 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.19 Go [a]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, –Mt. 28:18-19 NKJV
  • 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who [a]believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. –Mk. 16:15-20 NKJV
  • 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me [a]to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are [b]oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 43 but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”–Lk. 4:18-19, 43 NKJV
  • 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” –Mt. 4:19 NKJV
  • 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! –Jn. 4:34-35 NKJV
  • 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. –Jn. 5:17, 19 NKJV
  • 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” 28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” –Jn. 6:27-29 NKJV
  • As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. –Eph. 4:1-3 NIV
  • 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. 13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. –Gal. 5:6, 13-18, 24-26 NKJV
  • Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body [a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not [b]puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, [c]thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. –1 Cor. 13:1-8, 13 NKJV
  • 14 “Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of [a]the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord! 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of [b]the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” –Jsh. 24:14-15 NKJV
  • 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but [a]exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,”lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15 while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” –Heb. 3:12-15 NKJV
  • 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were [a]delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. –Rom. 6:16-18 NKJV
  • 6 For to be [a]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the [b]carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. —Rom. 8:6-8 NKJV
  • 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your [a]stay here in fear; –1 Pet. 1:14-17 NKJV
  • 22 For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave.23 You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. –1 Cor. 7:22-23 NASB
  • 45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food[a]in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. –Mt. 24:45-46 NKJV
  • 26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. –Jn. 12:26 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • To believe and behave in such a way as to experience the perfect law of freedom in righteousness and holiness not the indulgence of self-idolatry in lust, carnal desires of greed, and pride.
  • That we fully understand that the Spirit of Life in Christ has liberated and secured our freedom over the law of sin and death.
  • That we learn that the promise of freedom and abundant life is secured for those who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
  • That responsibility is the ability to respond the right way in living freely in truth and obedience to the will of the Father.
  • That we are never to compromise holiness by claiming grace as a cover-up for our willful rebellion and disobedience in friendship with the world, or allegiance to the flesh.
  • That our freedom was freely given, not to live the life we intended for ourselves but live freely the life intended for us.
  • That freedom requires responsibility with accountability to answer for our stewardship of the trust given us.
  • That we understand that freedom means we are responsible to love others as we are loved and be laborers of love in harvest of souls and the marketplace of trade between slaves and sons.

  1. FREEDOM FOR FREEDOM’S SAKE

Galatians 5:1

It is for freedom’s sake that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, then,

and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery.

2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

General Direction: That it is for freedom’s sake that Christ set us free, therefore, we must attain and maintain the Spirit of freedom; for humanity drifts toward tyranny, oppression, and slavery without responsibility, accountability, wisdom, character, maturity, generosity, and faithful stewardship of the truth of freedom.

 Scriptures:

  • The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a] 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. –Is. 61:1-3 NIV

  • 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am [a]gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” –Mt. 11:28-30 NKJV
  • 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. –Mt. 6:33 NKJV

  • 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. –2 Cor. 8:7, 8 NKJV

  • 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of [a]corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? –Rom 8:19-23, 29-32 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • That it is for freedom’s sake that Christ set us free, for this is, as it is in heaven, so it is the intention and yearning of earth.
  • That corrupted humanity tends to slip towards tyranny and slavery and that independence and freedom must be bought and secured for every passing generation; that free is not free; salvation is free, the rest costs everything.
  • That taking the yoke of Christ means to learn of Him, walk with Him, and do as He does and no longer take up the yoke of slavery in doing what we want or doing things for men’s praise and approval.
  • That in true freedom we can do nothing without the Father but we can do all things through Christ’s strength for Father’s pleasure.
  • That the Spirit is freedom, therefore the Spirit of freedom arrives and abides where He is welcomed and where surrender to His will remain.
  • That we learn that freedom is a heavier burden than slavery, in that, a slave only has to do as told and be robbed of choices, opinions, and options, whereas, the free are responsible to not abuse freedom whether by legalism or liberalism.
  • That we exercise our spiritual senses in every level of maturity and every aspect of living not to limit freedom by legalism or abuse freedom by indulging in self-idolatry.
  • That we freely give as we have freely received in generosity, stewardship, responsibility, accountability, wisdom, maturity, and character.
