Five ways to Say I Love You with My Life

1 Timothy 4:12, 16 NIV

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, BUT SET AN EXAMPLE for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.

Vs. 16

WATCH YOUR LIFE and DOCTRINE CLOSELY, persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

“Only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” –Missionary C.T. Studd

Introduction:

Scripture charges us to watch our life and examine of our faith.  In the end, we will not be judged for the life we lived, but for the life we should have lived.  There is no more important exercise than to examine one’s example.  The Greek word for examine is: pĕriazō; to test; to scrutinize or analyze; to prove or learn by trial; to give due diligence to discover evidence for the truth.  We are instructed by God Himself to judge ourselves so we will not come under judgment (See 1 Cor. 11:31).

Some examples come to mind when considering an examination.  All of us have gotten a little piece of paper from a garment pocket with an inspector’s number on it: Inspected by                  .  Or a fruit inspector plucking bad fruit and picking good.  Then there is the structural engineer inspecting an aircraft under special high intensity lighting and magnified lenses to detect micro stress- fractures not visible to the human eye.  Those all have one thing in common.  There is a standard and there is a process of acceptance or rejection.

What we learn from God’s Word is that Satan always tempts us to disapprove and demote us and deny us the promises of God.  God always tests us to approve us and promote us to higher levels of responsibility which render greater rewards for winning Christ.  The judgment seat of Christ could be liken to a great big dump truck backing up to His footstool and dumping every choice we’ve made in this life before His throne.  He then begins to examine each decision as to whether it was done for Him or for ourselves.  He separates them into piles like the parable of the talents, tares and wheat, or sheep and goats.  He then tests with fire to see what they are made of.  Those who lived a life for themselves will suffer everlasting loss.  The lives lived by following the examples of Christ will be refined to everlasting gain..

The Apostle Paul charges, Pastor Timothy of Ephesus:  “Do not let anyone look down on you because you’re young”. This does not speak of his being juvenile but of his being young to hold so high a position in ministry.  It would be like saying someone 40 or 50 years of age is young to hold an esteemed office of president or prime minister.  It is clear from Scripture there is a greater responsibility and stricter judgment for Christian leaders.

NOT MANY [of you] should become teachers (self-constituted censors and reprovers of others), my brethren, for you know that we [teachers] will be judged by a higher standard and with greater severity [than other people; thus we assume greater accountability and the more condemnation].  –Jam 3:1 Amplified Bible

Therefore, this is the only test in life we simply cannot afford to fail.  The old saying is “That which is EXPECTED gets RESPECTED, when it’s INSPECTED.  Dr. Edwin Lewis Cole wrote: “Maturity doesn’t come with age, but with the acceptance of responsibility.”  Here is where we will judge or be judged.  The Greek word for “example” is: typŏs; to stamp or shape; to model for imitation; to trend set or set a pattern; to reproduce in like-kind; to print or copy by impression for expression.  Casting Crowns recorded Let my life-song sing to You…Jesus said Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven . (Mt. 5: 16)  We leave a mark on everyone we meet.  Paul’s admonishment to Timothy was sobering, Watch your life and teaching closely.  Persevere in this, because if you do, you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.  (2 Tim. 4:15)

Today we will pray into five ways to say I love You to God by examining the five examples set forth in 1 Timothy 4:12Speech, Life, Love, Faith, and Purity.  It behooves us to contemplate the words from a Steve Green Song:

O may all who come behind us, find us faithful. May the fire of our devotion light their way.  May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe.  And the lives we live inspire them to obey. O may all who come behind us find us faithful!

As we pray may His impression become our expression in setting the example. Treasure that is laid up in heaven must be laid down on earth!

  1. IN SPEECH

Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV

But I say to you that for every word men may speak THEY WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF IT in the Day of Judgment.  For By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. –Jesus

Psalm 141:3 NIV

Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; Keep watch over the door of my lips.

Psalm 19:14 NIV

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, My Rock and My Redeemer.

General Direction:  To speak knowing our words frame worlds; they are carriers and containers of life and death; we will give an account for every word we speak, therefore we need to daily ask Holy Spirit to set a guard at our lips and a gauge on our hearts.

Scriptures:

  • And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. – Rev. 12:11 NKJV
  • How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news,Who proclaims peace,Who brings glad tidings of good things,Who proclaims salvation,Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” – Is. 52:7 NKJV
  • 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the Day of Judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Mt. 12:33-37 NKJV
  • 18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” – Mt. 18:18-20 NKJV
  • Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;Keep watch over the door of my lips. – Ps. 141:3 NKJV
  • Death and life are in the power of the tongue,And those who love it will eat its fruit. – Pro. 18:21 NKJV
  • 20 My son, give attention to my words;Incline your ear to my sayings.21 Do not let them depart from your eyes;Keep them in the midst of your heart;22 For they are life to those who find them,And health to all their flesh.23 Keep your heart with all diligence,For out of it spring the issues of life. – Pro. 4:20-23 NKJV
  • (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; — Rom. 4:17 NKJV
  • 2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh. –Jam 3:2-12 NKJV
  • 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. – Jam. 5:14-16 NKJV
  • Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. – Gal. 6:7 NKJV
  • Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. – Eph. 4:29 NKJV
  • The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,And they go down into the inmost body. – Pro. 26:22 NKJV
  • And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; — Eph. 6:17 NKJV
  • 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. – Rom. 10:8-10, 17 NKJV
  • Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior]. – Heb. 4:14 AMP.
  • I shall not die, but live,And declare the works of the Lord. – Ps. 118:17 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • To learn to listen twice as much as we speak. (Jam. 1:19)
  • To speak knowing our words are framing worlds. (Heb. 11:3)
  • To realize that words are carriers and containers of life and death.
  • To daily ask Holy Spirit to set a watch at our lips and work in our hearts to speak truth in love and grace.
  • To use our words as weapons to cast out devils, tear down strongholds, and speak to mountains.
  • To remind ourselves that we are accountable for every word we speak before God.
  • To recapture the power of Spirit-language by praying in the Spirit. (Jude 20-21; 1 Cor. 14:1-4)
  • To regain the power of faith by speaking the words of God in our hearing. (Rom. 10:17)

  1. IN LIFE

1 Corinthians 11:1 Amplified

Pattern YOURSELVES after me [follow my example] as I imitate and follow Christ (the Messiah).

2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NIV

YOU YOURSELVES are our letter, written on our hearts, KNOWN and READ BY EVERYBODY.  You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the Living God, not on tablets of stone by on tablets of human hearts.

General Direction: To daily learn to deny ourselves and the life we want for ourselves and to take up our cross and live the life God wants for us knowing that is impacting those around us and those watching us and thus we determine our eternal regret or reward in heaven.

Scriptures:

  • There is a way that seems right to a man,But its end is the way of death. – Pro.14:12 NKJV
  • Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ – Jer. 6:16 NKJV
  • “Now you shall say to this people, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.” – Jer. 21:8 NKJV
  • I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. – Gal. 2:20 NKJV
  • If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. –  Col. 3:1-3 NKJV
  • Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners,Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,And in His law he meditates day and night.3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water,That brings forth its fruit in its season,Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. – Ps. 1:1-3 NKJV
  • 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” – John 1:8-9 NKJV
  • 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. – Mt. 7:13-14 NKJV
  • by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, — Heb. 10:20 NKJV
  • For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. – Eph. 2:10 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • To live knowing we will give an account not for our good intentions but our good works and the life we lived out.
  • To live knowing that our life is a love-song to the Father and is the highest form of worship.
  • To live a life worthy of the life that was laid down for us to redeem us at a price.
  • To live in constant awareness that our example is directly and indirectly influencing and impacting those around us and those watching from a distance towards death or life.
  • To live knowing our life works are being weighed in the balance and our heavenly treasures are laid up by where our earthly treasures were laid.
  • To live with the knowledge that the fullness of life is not measured by how well we lived the life we planned for ourselves, but how well we lived the life planned for us.

  1. IN LOVE

John 13:34-35 NKJV

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another, by this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.

Galatians 5:6 NIV

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

1 John 14:16-17 NKJV

God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and He in God.  Love has been perfected among us in this; that we MAY HAVE BOLDNESS IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT; because as He is, so are we in this world.

General Direction: To learn to love the way we are loved and that love abides forever and is the greatest expression of God’s own heart; that love is demonstrated in obedience, sacrificial living, and good works.

Scriptures:

  • 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” – Mt. 22:37-40 NKJV
  • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.– Gal. 5:6 NIV
  • For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Gal. 5:14 NIV
  • 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. –1 Jn. 2:15-17 NKJV
  • 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? –1 Jn. 3:16-17 NKJV
  • 17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us. –1 Jn. 4:17-19 NKJV
  • 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it. –2 Jn. 6 NKJV
  • And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” –1 Pet. 4:8 NKJV
  • 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails.  13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.—1 Cor. 13:4-8a, 13 NKJV
  • 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. – Deut. 6:4-7 NKJV
  • 12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? – Deut. 10:12-13 NKJV
  • 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – Jn. 13:34-35 NKJV
  • Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. – Jn. 15:13 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • To learn love knowing it is the hallmark of Christianity—far greater than knowledge, giftings, or skills mastered.
  • To learn to love the way we are loved by Christ.
  • To learn to love knowing that perfected love is learned obedience.
  • To learn to love by laying down our lives in love the way Jesus did to us.
  • To learn the definition of love by God’s vocabulary. (Mt. 22:37-40; 1 Cor. 13; 2 Jn. 6 obedience, sacrifice, and faithfulness)
  • To learn to love even our enemies, that love conquers hate, and casts out fear.
  • To learn that God is love and if He is in us we can love with His love in us and not hate our neighbor.
  • To learn that love is measured both by adoration and affection, as well as, hating and abhorring the things that God does. (Heb. 2:9)
  • To learn that love left unexpressed is not love at all, but love must be seen, felt, and heard before it is true love.

  1. IN FAITH

2 Corinthians 13:5 Amplified

Examine and test and evaluate yourselves to see whether YOU ARE HOLDING TO YOUR FAITH and showing the proper fruits of it.  Test and prove yourselves [not Christ].  Do you not yourselves realized and know [thoroughly by an ever-increasing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you are [counterfeits] disapproved on trial and rejected?

2 Timothy 1:13-14 NIV

What you heard from me, keep AS A PATTERN OF SOUND TEACHING, WITH FAITH, and LOVE in Christ Jesus.  GUARD THE GOOD DEPOSIT THAT WAS ENTRUSTED TO YOU—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit WHO LIVES IN US.

General Direction:  To comprehend that faith is not compartmentalized but overlaps into every area of our lives called to “the life of the faith of the Son of God” and that faith involves works and blending beliefs into behavior.

Scriptures:

  • …looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. –Heb. 12:2 NKJV
  • I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. – Gal. 2:20 NKJV
  • Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. – Heb. 11: 1, 6 NKJV
  • 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. –2 Tim. 4:7-8 NKJV
  • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.– Gal. 5:6 NIV
  • 20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. –Jude 20-23 NIV
  • I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” – Lk. 18:8 NKJV
  • So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. – Rom. 10:17 NKJV
  • Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. – Jam. 2:17 NKJV
  • For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. –1 Jn. 5:4 NKJV
  • Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” – Mt. 9:29 NKJV

Prayer Points:

  • To prove the example of faith knowing God’s definition of faith covers every aspect of our lives.
  • To express our faith by learning to be living sermons, as well as, those that brings Good News.
  • To remember that faith is the first priority of God, not the last leftover or multi-choice option.
  • To demonstrate faith by doing what God’s word says—written and spoken.
  • To show forth our faith by learning to depend on God for everything not others or ourselves.
  • To know that according to our faith is how we will receive accordingly.
  • To have the expectation that we are not to be overcome by evil, but we overcome evil with good works and faith is the victory of overcoming.
  • To understand that Holy Spirit comes to convict us of unbelief and that choosing to believe or not believe has eternal consequences.
  • To learn to feed our faith and starve our doubts to death and as faith increases rewards are extended to the faithful.

  1. IN PURITY

1 Timothy 5:22 NIV

Keep yourself pure.

1 Peter 1:22 NKJV

Since you have PURIFIED YOUR SOULS in obeying the truth through the Spirit, love one another fervently WITH A PURE HEART.

Romans 12:9 NIV

Love must be sincere. (pure)

Matthew 5: 8 NIV

Blessed are the PURE in HEART, for they shall see God.

General Direction:  To set the example of purity by learning to WORK OUT what God is WORKING IN; that we must quickly confess shortcomings, bear fruit in keeping with repentance, and that happiness is holiness when it is perfected in the fear of the Lord.

Scriptures:

  • 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. – Eph. 5:26-27 NKJV
  • 11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. —1 Titus 2:11-14 NIV
  • 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it! –2 Corinthians 11:3-4 NKJV
  • 12 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’, but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” – Mt. 21:12-13 NKJV
  • Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. –2 Cor. 7:1 NKJV
  • 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. – Jam. 3: 13-18 NKJV
  • And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. – 1 Jn. 3:3 NKJV
  • 3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face. Selah – Ps. 24:3-6 NKJV
